PS4

All signs point towards Sony officially unveiling the PlayStation 4 on February 20–and then releasing it later in 2013. It seems strange, doesn’t it? The next-generation is so close, and yet we know so very little. Well, actually, we might know more than you’d think.

We might know the price. We might know the release date. We might know what the controller will look like, and we might know exactly what it will do. We might even know what’s under the hood. Now, days before we officially “know” about the PlayStation 4, let’s look over what we think we know about it.

PS4 News and Countdown

Trust us; this isn’t up for debate. CVG can guarantee that the next generation home PlayStation console will be announced in New York on Wednesday. Sources that have confirmed this are numerous, increasing by the day, all connected to Sony and absolutely trusted. It’s happening.

Yes, we’re hyped. While industry experts irrationally declare the death of the console, you’ll see no such attention-seeking cynicism here. We are unashamedly, unreservedly thrilled to usher in a new era of core game systems – and, deep down, we know you are too.

Our PS4 Countdown blog kicks off a week of coverage including analysis of what we know about Orbis (the codename for Sony’s next console) and what’s likely to be announced in New York.

On February 20 at 6pm Eastern Time (11pm UK) we will stream live video of the PlayStation Meeting right here on this page.

We’ll also include our own reactions via a live blog manned by our man in New York, along with a full news team at battle stations offering the fastest stories and finest analysis available.

Get ready. It’s just a matter of time now.

XBOX 720? What to expect from Microsoft’s next gaming system

XBOX E3 2012

XBOX E3 2012

XBOX 720 or XBOX Durango?

It’s the question on the minds of countless gamers: What’s up with the next Xbox? With Nintendo’s next-gen system already on store shelves and the creaky Xbox 360 hitting middle age in dog years, many of us are prepping for Microsoft’s next gaming console, also known in gossip circles as the Xbox 720.

When asked about the future of Xbox, a Microsoft spokesperson told RedBullUSA.com, “Xbox 360 has found new ways to extend the console lifecycle by introducing controller-free experiences with Kinect and re-inventing the console with a new dashboard and new entertainment content partnerships. We are always thinking about what is next for our platform and how to continue to defy the lifecycle convention.”

Translation: We still want to sell a lot of Xbox 360s for a few more months, thank you. We suspect that the cat will finally be let out of the bag at the E3 Expo in June. In the meantime, here are the hottest rumors and speculation about the next Xbox.

What’s in a Name?

Last year, a senior technical designer with Crytek wrote a tweet (later deleted) that accidentally leaked a possible code name for the next Xbox: ‘Durango.’ Other sources say it has been nicknamed ‘Loop.’

But both are unlikely to make it as the final name. Keep in mind that before the Xbox 360 was released, Microsoft considered Xbox Next, Xenon, Xbox 2 and Next Box. Most people are referring to the system as Xbox 720, but Microsoft has kept mum about an official name….
